Tour the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho

This year Tetonsplitboarder is proud to team up with Sawtooth Mountain Guides and bring you a splitboard trip like no other. January 16-19 2018 we have the Williams peak Hut in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho reserved for up to 10 splitboarders.

Based at 8000 ft on the flanks of Williams Peak in the northern Sawtooth Range, the legendary Williams Peak Hut offers some of the best hut-accessed backcountry ski terrain anywhere. Wildly popular for its broad variety of terrain, the Williams Peak Hut is sure to please novice riders, powder hounds, and big mountain aficionados alike. Powder glades, alpine bowls, extreme couloirs, and high mountain tours are all available right out the doorstep. Now imagine riding from the hut with a professional splitboard guide intimately familiar with all the hidden nooks and crannies.

The 16 and 20 foot yurts provide a warm and cozy base for your ski explorations. Handcrafted by SMG founder Kirk Bachman and installed in 1986, these yurts were some of the first used in North America as a backcountry skiing shelter. The hut is fully stocked with warm wood-stoves, kitchen and cooking supplies, and bunk beds – everything you need for a comfortable stay. In the evening, swap tales from the day over a refreshing beverage and hearty dinner, then soothe your tired muscles in the sauna. In the morning, grab a cup of coffee, eat a hearty breakfast, and it’s out the door to do it again!

Leave the hard work to us. We’ll haul the food in for you, and with sleeping bags already stocked at the hut, you’ll have the luxury of carrying a light pack into the hut. Once at the hut, everything is taken care of and all you have do is snowboard, eat, laugh, and sleep!

The terrain surrounding the hut will keep everyone entertained, whether you’re a hardened steep snowboarding junkie, or you’re content riding open powder shots beneath the rugged Sawtooth summits.

Day one it’s a 5 mile ski into the hut from the trail-head, with a vertical gain of 1600 feet. The route follows a summer hiking trail and there are no snowmobiles allowed. This is a mellow skin along a ridge with sweeping views of the Sawtooth Range. This is a great way to warm up to split boarding. The next two days we wake up and hold a morning guides meeting that we want everyone to participate in. This gives you a unique opportunity to see “behind the curtain” on how we as guides make decisions on what terrain we will ride based on current conditions. These days are filled with the numerous splitboarding options of the Sawtooths.  Day four it’s another full day of riding followed by the descent back to the trail head. This gives you plenty of opportunity to master the techniques of the splitboard with guidance from our splitboard guides.

The historic resort town of Jackson Hole is the gateway to some of the best powder skiing in the west. From open bowls to perfect gladed trees to steep couloirs, the Tetons provide fantastic adventures. From the epic inbound powder stashes of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, to the resort side country and pure backcountry, we have options for all conditions. Let our team of guides create a private tour and show you the secret stashes and best conditions.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort Backcountry

The Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has some of the best terrain in the country. Both in bounds and out of bounds terrain are guided by the Jackson Hole Alpine Guides. Using the aerial tram to access 10,450’ Rendezvous Mountain allows you to ride in bounds on a powder day or go for a short backcountry tour.  The in bounds terrain is also perfect training grounds to learn steep riding technique.

The close proximity of the tram-accessed backcountry to the ski resort allows for multiple runs, with each run returning to the base of the ski area. This makes it perfect beginner splitboard terrain. You can also access this terrain on a standard board and simply hike to the different runs on established boot packs.  Since this is uncontrolled avalanche terrain, a transceiver, shovel and probe are required.

Teton Pass

Teton Pass is home to some of the country’s best roadside backcountry riding. While the crowds gather at the summit parking lot, Exum Mountain Guides has permits to guide in the far less crowded areas of Mt. Oliver and Mail Cabin Creek. These areas have easy and moderate approaches to numerous open bowls and glades. This terrain is perfect for everyone from the beginner to expert splitboarders.

Grand Teton National Park

Backcountry splitboarding in Grand Teton National Park is an experience every splitboarder should have. The riding is world class and no place in the valley offers better views of this magnificent mountain range. Long approaches and huge vertical runs make riding in the park a full day trip. Pack a lunch and prepare for the adventure of a lifetime. Whether you prefer riding deep untracked powder on such classics as 25 Short, Mavericks, or Albright Peak, or if you are interested in the snowboard mountaineering routes on the high peaks, Exum Mountain Guides can accommodate your needs.

Avalanche Education

Teton splitboarder is proud to work with the amazing staff at the American Avalanche Institute. AAI has been teaching avalanche courses in the Tetons since 1973. No other organization is more familiar with the snowpack in the Tetons than AAI. Level 1,2, and 3 group courses are offered throughout the winter.  Private courses are also available.
